When the time stops: The “Grotta dei Cocci” (Terni, Italy)

Ceramic findings from “Grotta dei Cocci” and dating back to the Early Neolithic were studied. The ceramic samples have been characterized by a combined use of Optical Microscopy (OM), X-ray Powder Diffraction (XRPD) Scanning Electron (SEM-EDAX) define mineralogical assemblage, estimate firing conditions provide information on raw materials used for production. results show that main mineral inclusions are quartz, flint carbonate rocks minor amount biotite, calcite, feldspar pyroxene; in addiction, fragments magmatic identified. optical active matrix presence primary calcite allow estimation maximum temperature range 750–850 °C under uncontrolled atmosphere conditions. Finally, local origin is supported sedimentary outcrop close archaeological site.
